Scholarship Graduate!
by Jeremy Williams on Aug.12, 2019, under News
Santiago Diaz was the first member of his family to graduate college but soon found that he craved a different type of skillset and education. He enjoyed working with his hands and learned the trade of carpentry. From there he saved up enough money to attend and graduate TSTS in Waco TX with an Associates in Diesel Technology. While in the diesel industry he also acquired electrical skills and later received his Electrical Power & Controls degree from TSTC North Texas. With numerous skills under his belt he began working in the maintenance department at Danone, a large milk manufacturer. Eager to learn more and continue growing, Santiago applied for a GCAP scholarship to learn more about industrial refrigeration and hopefully move into an ammonia refrigeration support role at the company. He attended the Ammonia Operator I course July 23-26, 2019 where he scored above average in his class.
Congratulations Santiago!!!

A.C. Indicator / Rotation Tester

Test solenoid coils easily with Magnetic Tool
Ensuring that the solenoid valve coil is energized, or detecting a faulty one, is an important step in any repair or installation project. Up until now, ammonia techs have had to rely on a variety of different methods and tools for that step, including a popular magnetic field-detecting keyring. But now there’s something much more accessible and convenient.
You always have the right tool with you, because it’s always just a tap away. Not only is it more convenient, it’s also more precise. The Magnetic Tool app provides information about the magnetic field of an AC or DC coil in a solenoid valve. It can also indicate the rotation direction of certain types of motors and pumps, helping you determine the correct way to install them in a system.
Magnetic Tool also allows you to take a video or picture of the faulty component, so you can document your repair procedure and share it.

Remembering Ronnie Peek
by Jeremy Williams on May.21, 2019, under News
Garden City Firefighter Ronnie W. Peek, age 49, of the Garden City Fire Department, died January 22, 2015, after self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) training. He served with the Garden City Fire Department for 17 years.
Ronnie was born June 2, 1965, in Ulysses, Kansas, to Warren and Loretta Bronson Peek. He graduated from Florence High School in Florence, Colorado, before beginning his career in public service. Shortly after high school, Ronnie joined the United States Navy, serving four years on the USS Missouri BB-63 based in Long Beach, California. He then spent time as a deputy with the El Paso County (Colorado) Sheriff’s Office. An opportunity to volunteer with the Grant County (Kansas) Fire Department helped Ronnie discover his love for firefighting. He joined the brotherhood of the Garden City Fire Department in 1998.
Two years earlier, in 1996, Ronnie married the love of his life, Lana Reid. The two raised three children, Haley Reid, Adriana Peek, and Logan Peek. Ronnie was a devoted husband and father and was very active in his children’s lives. When he wasn’t at work, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Around the firehouse, Ronnie was known for his extensive knowledge of the department’s trucks. He enjoyed operating each of them, particularly the CFR-7 at the Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Station at Garden City Regional Airport. He was also known for his meticulous organization. He knew where everything was around the station and on each truck, down to the smallest or least used part. He also made sure each piece of Tupperware was stored with its lid.
Ronnie was an outstanding member of the honor guard, bringing his military experience to the group. He was incredibly generous with his time, making friends anywhere he went. Ron never missed the MDA Boot Block, the annual fundraiser held for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. He was always seeking to help others without expecting anything in return. This desire to help others led to a second career with Finney County EMS, where he served from May 2006 until he passed away.
Ronnie is survived by his wife, Lana; his children, Haley George, Adriana Peek, and Logan Peek; grandchildren, Selene George and Aniyah Peek; his Garden City Fire Department brothers; and a host of family and friends.
Ronnie lived his life according to his favorite quote: “Live for today, because you never know about tomorrow.”
GCAP will honor the life of this great man and has awarded scholarships to many students searching for continued education in his name.

Ammonia Leak – Sulfur Stick – Burning
by Jeremy Williams on May.14, 2019, under News
This short video is an example of detecting a small ammonia leak around this compressor. One of the most common methods to find small ammonia leaks is to burn a sulfur stick. There must be a flame present and the sulfur dioxide gas is almost invisible until it reacts with ammonia gas. With an open flame, remember that if the NH3 is in the right fuel range it can also burn as seen in this demonstration.
